What is Moonquake?
Definition
Hello People, Moonquake is similar to an earthquake but it lasts for a long time up to 10 minutes. The causes of earthquake movement in the tectonic plate but on the moon it is totally different mechanisms
Types & Causes
- Meteoritic impacts
- Thermal quake
- Shallow quake
1. Meteoritic impacts
It is caused due to the strike of meteoroids hitting the surface of the moon
2. Thermal quakes
It is caused by the expansion of frigid crust by the sun's heat at 280degree C for two weeks and cool during lunar nights
It is called deep quakes about 700Km below the surface
3. Shallow quake
The shallow quakes happen at 20-30Km from the surface
According to NASA, the cool and rigid body of the moon is the reason for the moon quake
It lasts for a long time up to 10 min

- According to the apollo seismic network recorded 28 shallow quakes between 1972-1977
- Few quakes are about a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale
